Travel and Doxycycline use of preventing malaria

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi Just wondering if I could get some advice. Me and my boyfriend are currently in Thailand (no risk malaria zone) we were prescribed doxycycline to prevent malaria before we left the UK in November as we were visiting India. The only malaria zone which we stopped in was Goa which we left a month ago. We have still been taking the tablets however we have both started to develop watery diahorrea. We rang our pharmacist back home and he advised to stop for 2 days which we have and we have noticed a great improvement. We are worried about going back on them and the same occuring again, or can we now stop taking them as we left a malaria zone a month ago and are not going to be travelling through any other high risk zones. (The nurse originally prescribed so many as we were unsure when we were going to visit Goa so she prescribed a whole course for India.) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Dear Rachel: I do understand your concern for the side effects of doxycycline. It is recommended that doxycycline should be continued till upto 4 weeks after leaving a malaria prone area. Doxycycline can be continued till a maximum of 4 months after which it needs to be stopped. |
