Dear Ask The Doctor: Chronic yellow diarrhea for over a month no other symptoms soffer from anxiety and psoriasis and have haital hernia had diarrhea on and off for 5 months prior
Dear Christine: Any diarrhea lasting more than 4 weeks is considered chronic and could be caused be a variety of conditions. Since you've mentioned that you have a hiatus hernia, I would suggest that you see a gastroenterologist because it may be the cause of your chronic diarrhea. Other causes that needs to be ruled out are irritable bowel syndrome, overuse of laxatives, chronic alcohol abuse, hormonal disturbances (e.g. hyperthyroidism), malabsorption disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, viral and/or parasitic infections, to name a few. A thorough history and physical exam should be done so the exact cause of the diarrhea can be determined. Test like complete blood count, stool microscopy for ova and parasites, fecal fat and colonoscopy may also be done. |
