Change in bowel habit warrants investigation

Dear Ask The Doctor: Every time I eat no matter what it is I end up with diarrhea. I have a hard time eating meat, cheese, anything with oil, milk and spicy foods. This just started when I turned 40 in December. Is there an OTC that I can take or a healthy alternative that would coat my stomach before meals that doesn't produce side effects?
Dear Randy: Any significant change in bowel habit from your former normal habit warrants investigation, especially in your case if your symptoms of diarrhoea only began at the age of 40. Chronic diarrhoea may be caused by infection, motility related disorder, inflammatory bowel disease, hormonal imbalance, dietary changes and some benign and malignant growths. I would advise attending your family doctor for a detailed history of your symptoms and clinical examination. He can perform further investigations with routine blood tests, stool samples and possible referral for colonoscopy, to identify the cause in your case, and prescribe appropriate treatment. |
