Dear Ask The Doctor: My husband, who is 21, feels like he is dieing. He has had frequent diarrhea for months along with headaches, muscle aches and fatigue. Within the past two weeks, he has experienced SEVERE diarrhea that causes him to wake up several times a night. The diarrhea has no substance, it's like colored water. He also has had a stomach ache for longer than a week. He can barely eat without getting severe stomach pain. Within the last week, he also seems to not be able to control his temp. He has no fever, but is freexing most of the time. We know this is not the stomach flu, as no one else has gotten it from him. I was thinkin it could be celiac disease? Please help.
Dear Alex: The symptoms you describe with frequent watery diarrhoea, especially at night, fatigue, muscle aches, abdominal pain and headaches, in someone of your husbands age would most likely represent an inflammatory bowel disorder (Ulcerative colitis, Crohns disease) or malabsorption syndrome (Coeliac disease). He is at risk of dehydration if fluid output (diarrhoea) is greater than fluid intake. I would advise him due to the severity of his symptoms, to attend his family doctor urgently or local emergency room (if more accessible). He may require admission to hospital to prevent dehydration and to fully investigate the cause of his symptoms. |
