Diarrhea |

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had my gallbladder taken out about 3 years ago, for a while when I ate greasy food or something similar I would have to go straight to the restroom with diarrhea. However for the past several months everything I eat and regardless of when I eat it within a few minutes I have to go to the restroom with diarrhea. I had a physical and the doctor said my test were all ok. Should I go back to him and have this checked. I don't like to go to the doctor unless its absolutely necessary. Dear Becky: I understand your concern about diarrhea. Surely it is not uncommon to have loose stools after eating heavy and greasy foods, especially in patients with their gallbladder removed. However this shouldn’t be a cause of diarrhea after eating all types of foods, in my opinion you should get tested for Malabsorption Syndromes. Malabsorption is usually the inability to absorb certain sugars, fats, proteins, or vitamins from food. Bloating, chronic diarrhea, gas are some of the symptoms present in this condition. Since you had your gallbladder removed, you already have a problem digesting fats due to the decrease concentration of bile. In the meantime you should drink plenty of fluids to compensate for the losses and try to identify the relation of your diarrhea and possible causes. You could avoid drinking and ingesting dairy products for a week and see if this stops your loose stools. This would help ruling out conditions such as lactose intolerance and would guide your physician ruling out other causes, I wish you a prompt recovery. |
