Causes of lactose intolerance

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am an 18 year old female and have been experiencing bouts of diarrhea and can't seem to figure out what exactly is causing it. I have noticed that whenever I eat anything with cream or heavy cream my stomach gets upset. I thought I might have some form of lactose intolerance, but I can drink milk and eat cheese, ice cream, and such without getting sick. I have eaten fettucine alfredo, cream puffs, creme brulee, and cream of crab soup and all of those upset my stomach. I also used to be able to eat all of that just fine until about 2 years ago. Please help if you can and thank you.
Dear Megan:Diarrhoea can be caused by infection, motility related disorder, inflammatory bowel disease, hormonal imbalance, dietary changes and some benign and malignant growths of the gastro-intestinal tract. Lactose intolerance can occur later in life secondary to other bowel problems including; bacterial overgrowth or stasis syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease), infection (Giardiasis) or inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (drugs, Coeliac disease). I would advise attending your family doctor for a detailed history and clinical examination. He can perform further investigations with routine blood tests, stool samples or a lactose tolerance test, to identify the cause in your particular case.. |
