Chronic Diarrhea |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, my name is Sean. I have had diarrhea for months now. Most of the time its the consistency of water. Recently it has turned green. I have bowell movemnets four to 5 times a day and each time there is alot. I can barely hold it in long enough to get to the bathroom when it hits me. I take lithium, wellbutrin, and a thyroid medication. I am starting to get worried because I havnt been eating much food because my appetite has gone down but the amount of feces is the same or has gone up. I also cant get dehydrated since im on lithium so Im have to make sure i drink enough water and gatorade every day. Ive been on Lithium for several years and I dont remember the diarrhea being that bad. Also I am 25 years old. Thank you for any advice you can give me. Dear Sean: I understand your concern about diarrhea, certainly one of the medications that you take might be the cause of it, and thyroid hormone might cause an increase in your bowel movements. I would suggest you to consult your endocrinologist to evaluate your thyroid hormone levels to rule out this possibility. In any case you might also need to have a stool sample test taken to rule out other possibilities such as infection or inflammation. Irritable bowel syndrome might be another possibility since you are under depression t the moment. I agree with you that Lithium and Wellbutrin can cause dry mouth and appetite loss, but no diarrhea. You should keep on drinking plenty of fluids to replenish your losses and rule out the definitive diagnosis of your diarrhea. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
