Dear Ask The Doctor: I was diagnosed with Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria in my stomach and i was just wondering how its transmitted and how to get rid of it sucessfully and symptoms and also is there a danger to having it for an extended amount of time and can it be contagious? Dear Samantha: This pathogen is spread in nature, inhabiting soil, water, plants, and animals (including humans). Pseudomonas aeruginosa has become an important cause of infection, especially in patients with compromised host defense mechanisms especially in patients who have been hospitalized more than a week. Pseudomonal infections can affect every portion of the GI tract. The disease usually affects very young children and adults with a compromised immune system. Signs of dehydration, abdominal distension, and signs of peritonitis or inflammation of the intestines surrounding might be present. The treatment for this condition consists of several dosages of antibiotics, the specific choice of antibiotic must be based upon the history of pseudomonas sensitivity to the particular drug in the community and, if the organism is cultured, its specific sensitivity to certain antibiotic. |
