Persistent diarrhoea and mucus

Dear Ask The Doctor: Why do I have continued one month of loose stool? I was traveling a lot back home in India, in between I caught dysentery with mucous stool, I went through medication needed for it with tablets and then, I had to travel to Delhi and Sweden, without getting proper . after continued medication the pain and mucous was gone, and the interval between defecation time lessened, but after returning back to Singapore I still have the problem of stool not tight enough and watery content and the stool itself comes out of sedimented or fragmented kind and still there is a bit of mucous in it because of its slippery content. I have lost a bit weight also, none of the medicines I consumed helped drastically to harden the stool
Dear Arnab:You may have a residual infection or inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, despite your current antimicrobial treatment, because of your symptoms of persisting diarrhea, mucus and weight loss. I would advise attending your family physician for a detailed history of your symptoms and clinical examination. You require stool analysis to check for ova and parasites, culture and sensitivity, routine blood work, and you may require further investigation with colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, to visualize the walls of the large intestine through a camera lens. |
