Diarrhea from sugar |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, Over the last while it seems any time I have anything sweet I tend to get stomach cramps and pains and diarrhea or a very loose stool. Is there some treatment i can take to ease my symptoms because as of right now I can't even have a muffin in the morning without feeling sick. Thanks Dear Eddie: Diarrhea can be caused by many different factors. If you have noticed that in your case is related to sugar ingestion, possibly Fructose which is a sugar found naturally in fruits and honey and added as a sweetener to some beverages might be the cause of your diarrhea since you may have trouble digesting it. Other artificial sweeteners such as manitol or sorbitol might also be included in the origin of your symptoms. I back your idea of avoiding sweets to confirm your suspect but I will also recommend consulting a gastroenterologist if the symptoms continue to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other possibilities. As for the treatment I would suggest you to recover your losses ingesting plenty of fluids, avoid sweets, heavy foods and artificial sweets. Your symptoms should pass within the next few days. I wish you the best. |
