Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter is 11 month old and has had diarrhea for over a week, she isnt poorly in anyway and is eating and drinking fine.she is teething and had a cold last week,im not sure if i should be concerned or what i should be giving her to help, thanks sarah Dear Sarah: I understand your concern about your daughter’s condition. Diarrhea is very common in infants and most likely is caused by a virus called Rotavirus. Apparently your daughter is not very ill, usually we don’t prefer to give patients of this age anti-diarrhea medications since her body would regulate by itself. However I would definitely suggest you to watch for Dehydration which is a serious complication. Watch for signs of Decreased urination like fewer wet infant diapers than usual in a 24 hour period, Infant has dry eyes and crying with few tears or no tears, High fever, sunken abdomen, Infant is less active than usual. If any of these symptoms are noted seek immediate attention. You could also try Pedyalite which would also help her recover electrolytes. I wish her a prompt recovery. |
