Rotavirus |

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a 13 month old who has been vomiting over the weekend, but now has stopped. She continues to have diarrhea. I have given her popsicles, tried pedilite, but she won't take it. She has taken some jello, a baked potato with nothing on it. She usually has a bottle of formula at night. Can she still have the formula? How long should I wait before taking her to the doctor. I work at a daycare and the stomach bug is going around. Dear Pat: I understand how worried you are about your child’s condition. Certainly the main treatment right now is rehydration; you should continue giving her the formula and also other fluids. Usually Rotavirus is the cause of this condition and spreads rapidly in daycare centers. I would also suggest you to watch for fever and give your child acetaminophen to treat it. Most likely, children recover by themselves from these viruses. However if the diarrhea last more than 2 weeks or if you notice sleepiness , dry mouth , sunken eyes and other signs of moderate to severe dehydration, take your child to the pediatrician. I wish her a prompt recovery. |
