importance of ORS and antinbiotics in Cholera treatment |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: What would be most useful NOW in Haiti for the current Cholera breakout? ORS or antibiotics? Dear Sue: I understand your concern about Cholera treatment. This endemic infection would cause severe dehydration in such a fast speed that the goal is to replace fluids and electrolytes lost through diarrhea using a simple rehydration solution, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) that contains specific proportions of water, salts and sugar. These ORS would definitely take a priority in epidemic states and would definitely need to be given to mild to moderate dehydrated patients. On the other hand IV saline and electrolytes must be given to severely dehydrated patients. Antibiotics such as the ones from the Macrolide family have proven to decrease the vomits and diarrhea and should be important as well. I hope I have cleared your doubt. |
