Diarrhea lasting more than two weeks |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I was recently put on a regimen of Clindamycin to clear up an infection I had with wisdom tooth extraction. When I started taking the pills, I noticed it said that one of the side effects was diarrhea. Sure enough about half way through my dosage of 1 pill 4x a day for a week (28 pills) I started to have diarrhea. I didnt think much of it, because I figured it would go away after I finished my doseage. It has been about 3 weeks now, and each time I make a bowel movement, it is diarrhea, and I am starting to get concerned. I've taken Immodium AD, but that didn't seem to fix it. So what I have been wondering is if I could still be experiencing side effects from the Clindamycin? How long will it stay in my system? Are there foods I should eat to help bind me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dear Anthony: Certainly after taking antibiotics, one of the most common side effects might be the development of diarrhea. Diarrhea associated with antibiotics is commonly caused by a disruption of the normal flora in your intestines. Let me reassure you that this would stop on its own; however you could try using Probiotics found in certain yogurts and over the counter products. Increase your water intake to recover your losses and eat grains, bananas, rice and toast. I wish you the best. |
