Whyd do IBS Symptoms Worsen During Pregnancy and Postpartum?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I was told years ago that I had IBS, and I realised that I cannot eat bread, rice or pasta. I had a baby recently and through the pregnancy I did not suffer at all but the last few days I've been getting strong pains like trapped wind in my lower stomach, and within moments I have to run to the bath room to empty my bowels, I've stayed clear of the food I know set off IBS so I dunno why I'm having so much trouble.
IBS symptom may flare up in women postpartum. Other women will note improvements during pregnancy, others will have worse symptoms. In some women, during and after pregnancy, IBS symptoms may change from diarrhea-predominant to constipation-predominant, and vice versa. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone may also affect the motility of the intestines. In fact, there are estrogen receptors in our intestines. This means that the increased hormone levels you have right now are worsening your IBS symptoms. Try avoiding dairy products for now because it will only produce more air in your bowels. Continue with the dietary restrictions and ask your doctor first if you will take over-the- counter anti-diarrheals (Lomotil); these drugs are taken with caution in breastfeeding women. I hope this helps. |
