Dear Ask The Doctor: What can I do for my 3 yr daughter that has diarrhea? Is there any thing I can give her to help this go away? I've stopped giving her dairy products and have made sure her has plenty of fliuds like water and p-lyte.
Dear BR: I recognize your concern for your daughter’s health. Diarrhea can be very common in children of that age due to viruses, in fact is most commonly caused by a Rotavirus infection which is very predominant in winter. This type of diarrhea usually resolves on its own, lasts for 3-7 days up to 2 weeks and the only treatment necessary would be to keep the patient well hydrated and treat the low grade fever if present.
However you should look for signs of high fever, abdominal pain and especially bloody diarrhea in which a bacterial type of infection might be present and in that case, a visit to the pediatrician is mandatory for treatment possibly with antibiotics. |
