Dear Ask The Doctor: For the past 4 days ive had Dearrhoea ive ate nothing but dry toast drank Gatorade, water, and took Imodium, Now on the 4th day its gone to yellow in the moring to Green and ive gone 18 times in one day. What else should i do?
Dear Will: You should see your doctor because you definitely need stool tests to be done. Diarrhea that should not cause concern will resolve on its own within 2-3 days. If it exceeds 3 days, investigations should be started. It is also alarming that the color of your stools is yellowish/greenish and you have been moving bowels very frequently. You should see a doctor as soon as possible. If it will take time before you get to see your doctor, I would suggest you get some oral rehydrating solution (Gastrolyte, Pedialyte for kids, etc). You can read the instructions because it may differ between brands. In general, 1 pack is added to 1 glass of water to replace water lost from frequent bowel movements and/or vomiting. Personally, I would discourage you from continuing Gatorade; it has more sugar than electrolytes (sodium, potassium) and it is possibly one of the factors that worsened your diarrhea. You can also have some congee or rice porridge, and add some salt to suit your taste; toast is also okay. You can have soups but avoid the oily ones or instant noodles because it is too salty. Even if these supportive measures will improve your diarrhea symptoms, this will not kill the organism that could be causing it. You need to be seen by a doctor so your hydration status can be assessed, tests can be done and antibiotics can be started. I do hope I have answered your question and I wish you well always. |
