Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been suffering with diarrhea for 9 days now. My stools are complete liquid. I am not suffering with any other symptoms, though there was what looked like blood on the toilet tissue a few times. I have been on a week long course of antibiotics for another matter, so thought that it might be a side effect of these, however these finished three days ago and it is still as bad as ever. Should I see someone or ride it out?
Dear Re: The diarrhea that you are experiencing is most probably the result of the antibiotic you took (co-amixoclav). Usually the symptoms disappear within 7-10 days and does not need any treatment. However if you notice increase in the frequency of diarrhea, fever, blood in stools, abdominal pain and cramping then you may need to consult your doctor for further evaluation. In some cases the antibiotics cause the normal flora of the intestines to change leading to the symptoms. |
