Menstrual Cycles After a Colonoscopy

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had a colonoscopy 2 weeks ago, my period is like clockwork but it is now 3 days late. Could the colonoscopy have this effect on my body. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative.
Dear Angela: Hello, I understand your concern about your late menses and recent Colonoscopy. In my opinion there is no reason why you would have a delay on your menses due to a Colonoscopy. This type of test has no contact with your reproductive system and might not be able to alter it in any way.
Sometimes women are not a regular as they think they are, there are other causes that can get involved such as stress, current medication or it could be just normal to have menses a few days early or a few days later than usual. If you think that you could be pregnant but your test was negative, it would be recommeded to take another test within a couple of days, if a positive result appears you might want to confirm it with a Blood pregnancy test done by your health care provider. If the results would still be negative without presence of menses yet, a visit to your Gynecologist would be ideal to rule out other causes such as hormonal imbalance. I wish you the best. |
