Abdominal bloating and extreme gas at night |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Two hours after I go to bed Iam woken by extreme gas and a feeling of bloating. It disrupts my sleep for the rest of the night. Idescribe it as my colon or digestion is stuck. the gas builds up to an explosion and continues all night. Had a colonoscopy about 6 months ago. found a small hiatal sliding hernia and a small ulcer. doc said hernia was no problem. prescibed nexium for the ulcer. Have been taking 40mg twice a day ever since. problem persists. also had the tube down the throat(endoscopy)? any ideas---thank you its wearing me down. feels like my colon is stuck. No diarrhoea. Dear Laurence: I understand your concern about bloating and flatulence. After reading your description of the events, I noticed that you are taking a medication that reduces the acid production of your stomach due to your history of hiatal hernia. In some percentage of patients, an excessive decrease in the acid production might interfere with the digestion of foods, especially sugar, starches, and fiber found in many foods in the small intestine because of a shortage or absence of certain enzymes that aid digestion. I would suggest you to first change your lifestyle by avoiding heavy foods at night, avoiding carbonated drinks, eat 2 at least 2 hours before going to bed. If these changes don’t work, you could try over the counter medication such as Mylanta and Simethicone. |
