Colonoscopy

Dear Ask The Doctor: What happens if you haven't taken enough laxatives, and you are still having bowel movements prior to a scheduled colonoscopy/endoscopy? Will they still be able to do the procedure if there is anything in the bowels or stomach. And how long does the pico-salax take before it's all done the job and there are no more bowel movements.

Dear Me:

I understand your worry about this matter, the point of preparing before a colonoscopy is to eliminate all fecal matter from the colon so that the physician conducting the colonoscopy will have a clear view.

The medications vary depending on your physician’s preferences but they have the same purpose. Pico Salax usually takes 4 hours to cause effects and you should start having bowel movements until the next 12 to 24 hours.
