Dear Ask The Doctor: I was bitten by an insect in early August which caused a fairly serious infection in my foot. I spent 4 days in a hospital and was given Clindamycin intravenously and then an oral prescription for another week after leaving the hospital. Since that time I have had a frequently loose and mucus filled stool. I have also had diarrhea and heartburn at least once or twice a week. My stomach and bowels in general have been more sensitive than usual, with caffeine or spicy foods often sending me to the restroom where before they would not have bothered me. Should I be concerned or will these affects subside with more time?
Dear Charles: From the history you are telling it is most unlikely that these symptoms are due to the medicine which was given in august. The symptoms suggest the change in liver functions or probelm with functions of gall bladder, so what I will suggest is go for tests for liver testing which is LFT , it will cover your gall bladder function too , if possible also get your serum amylase checked which will tell you about pancreatic functions, get them done asap.
The other possibility is that you have developed a case of gastritis. Depending on its severity, it can be treated with over the counter or prescription medications. Lifestyle modification is also required requiring elimination of caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol and other foods that may aggravate your symptoms. A physical exam done by your family doctor will be able to rule out or rule in gastritis. |
