Gallbladder removal and weight gain

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 21 years old and I had my gallbladder removed about 6 months ago, October 1st 2010. Since I started getting gallbladder attacks about a year ago, I started gaining weight and everything I ate went right though me. Now that I do not have my gallbladder, this has not changed. I understand why certain things I eat make me have quick and mild painful bowl movements, but this is my question: Why am I still gaining weight? Is this from not having a gallbladder anymore? I am on a stricted diet and I exercise 3 to 4 times a week and I still gain weight or I barely lose any weight. When I started having problems with my gallbladder and gallstones, I weight 115 pounds and I am now 145 pounds. I would also want to add that I dealt with a eating disorder in highschool. Thank you.
Dear Rosamaria: Gall bladder issues usually do not make you gain weight as you have indicated. However an overweight individual may be more prone to developing gall bladder conditions. There are many causes of increase in weight inspite of normal to low diet. One of the main ones is hypothyroidism and this leads to increased weight inspite of decreased appetite.Hypothyroidism is also accompanied by other symptoms like cold intolerance, irregular menstrual cycles, fine and coarse hair, decreased energy , lethargy. Considering your age other conditions like polysystic ovarian syndrome could also lead to similar symptoms. I would adivice you to see your GP and get a thyroid hormone level done and take it from there. In the mean time keep maintaining a healthy lifesyle and keep eating healthy. Engage in Aerobic or cardio exercises every day for atleast 30-40 minutes. |
