Dear Ask The Doctor: "I have been having very light colored stools lately and I am nursing my 15 month old. I have also been having a lot of heartburn at night . I have not had a period since I started nursing and I had a tubal ligation at the birth of my 15 month old. Should I see a doctor?"
Dear Kathryn: Usually changes in the color of the stools are harmless and some variability is usually present as a result of the breakdown of bile present in the gut. If you have been noticing that the light color of stools are consistent, then further evaluation needs to be done. You have also mentioned that you are also experiencing a lot of heartburn at night. Light or clay colored stools could be the result of obstruction of bile due to stone or stricture of the main bile duct. It may also be a sign of hepatitis, infection, or absorption problems of the intestines. You may need to consult your doctor to rule out these causes. |
