Gallbladder Issues |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I am havig pain that varies from a scale of 3-8 on the lower right side of my abdomen. I recently had my ovaries removed and my doctor advised me that my gall bladder was about twice as large as normal. (uterus was removed a long time ago) I am noticing that when I eat I am having mild to extreme nausua, usually after supper. I also have had an increase in headaches and gas. I also am constantly tired. It's been nearly 3 years since I've had my gall bladder tested and the test showed it to be normal then. I am concerned this may be gall bladder issues, but am weary of having to go to the doctor yet again. I am beginning to feel like I am in their office all the time. Do you have any recommendations? Dear Heidi: I understand your concern a about possible gallbladder condition. According to your description of the events, in my opinion there is an open possibility to consider gallbladder pathology. In my opinion due to your symptoms, medication and age the presence of gallstones in your gallbladder might need to be ruled out; usually they produce nausea, vomits and pain in the right upper abdomen especially after fatty meals due to obstruction of the gallbladder once it contracts to release the bile. The obstruction does not have to be complete to cause pain. An evaluation done by your primary care physician and a possible ultrasound and blood tests might be needed as well to rule it out. If there is presence of gallbladder stones, certainly an early diagnosis might be beneficial to treat it only with medication and lifestyle changes. If there were no gallstones present, other possibilities that could cause inflammation of the gallbladder might need to be considered. In the mean time you could avoid copious and fatty meals, drink plenty of fluids and watch for increae in pain until your next appointment. I wish you the best. |
