Normal and below average blood pressure readings

Dear Ask The Doctor: My regular blood pressure is 120/80,but for the past few days i have had dizziness and checked my blood pressure and it was 105/68,should i be concerned?

Dear Lorelei: A normal blood pressure reading is 120/80. A reading of 105/68 is just below average, but may still be normal in many people. Low blood pressure is generally a benign condition, unless you are having symptoms of lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting or frequent falls. Most low blood pressure is due to a postural drop i.e. when you stand up suddenly your BP falls and you experience symptoms. It can also be caused by dehydration, drugs, anaemia, heart failure or severe infection. Awareness that you have low blood pressure is important in its management, for example on rising in the morning it may be beneficial to sit at the edge of the bed momentarily prior to rising. If low blood pressure is causing significant symptoms, fainting or collapse, I would advise attending your family doctor.
