Dear Ask The Doctor: Would steroids help reduce some of the symptoms caused by a meningioma that is adjacent to and pushing on my brain stem? I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon at the end of February, but need some help now. Should I see a neurologist? I am a traveling nurse and am not in my home state, thus my PCP is not available to me at this time.
Dear Judy: Steroids would likely help with the symptoms of your meningioma. Steroids help to reduce swelling around the tumor and thus relieve the pressure on the brain stem. This should only be prescribed by your Neurologist/Neurosurgeon after an examination and review of all your tests results.
