Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm a 16-year-old male, with no health problems (that I know of). I've noticed that when I suddenly get up after being still for a long time (such as after finishing reading a book), I briefly get dizzy, my vision fades, and I feel the urge to fall to the floor. This usually quickly disappears, but I was wondering if this is normal, or if this is symptomatic of something that I should get checked out.
Dear Michael: You may have postural hypotension. This happens when the BP drops quickly, transiently decreasing blood flow to theupper part of the body when one suddenly stands from a sitting or lying position. A simple test can be done if the BP is taken while lying down, and again while standing up. A difference of >20/10 mm Hg is diagnostic of postural hypotension. If you want to know for sure, you can go see your doctor so you can be completey assessed and ask if you do need blood tests. I hope I have answered your question and take care always. |
