Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 23 year old female, I am slightly overweight. For the past three months, I have had fainting spells. They happen when I wake up from a deep sleep and walk to answer the door or go to the rest room. I get really dizzy, then I go out. I have multiple bruises from falling. When I wake up, I don't remember getting out of my bed. I have ruled out high blood pressure and blood sugar problems. My blood pressure is 123/79 and my blood sugar is 102. Is there anything you can think of that would cause this?
Dear Stevie: From the symptoms you describe, this suggests vasovagal syncope. On standing up quickly when you are getting out of bed, you feel dizzy and fall to the ground, losing consciousness. This is a benign condition however there are several other potential causes that must be excluded. I suggest attending your family doctor for a detailed history and clinical examination. He may refer you for some investigations including a 24 hour Holter (heart) monitor, to rule out a heart rhythm abnormality, or a tilt table test, which can correlate blood pressure drops with symptoms of dizziness or loss of consciousness. |
