Have I got an eye infection?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My eye has been sore for 2 days. Its been burning and feels a bit dry. it doesn't look red but it really hurts. Have i got an infection? And what should i do?

Dear Chelsea: Burning eyes have many possible causes. Exposure to irritants such as dust, smoke and household chemical are the most common cause of sore eyes. Extremes of cold or hot dry air may also result in burning eyes. Other causes may include allergies, conjunctivitis or corneal injury due to trauma. The treatment for burning eyes varies depending on the cause. In many cases, the burning goes away by itself when you get away from the irritating factor, such as smoke. If over the counter antihistamines fail to relieve your symptoms, I would suggest that you see an ophthalmologist. Take care.
