Treatment for Itchy swollen eyes

Dear Ask The Doctor: For about a week now I have been waking up to itchy eyes, at first they were just dry at the end and I didn't think nothing of it, then a couple days later they got itchy and woke up with them swollen. At one point I thought it was going away since the swelling was going down and it wasn't itchy, but then I took a shower and you know like everybody else I rub my eyes in the shower... I think I may have disturbed the healing or something but I woke up the next morning with them slightly swollen. And it hasn't gone away that happened about three days ago, rightnow I wake up and theyre itchy and swollen like I hkave been crying. My sisters wedding is this Saturday, and I'm scared this won't go away by then, I'm not sure what to do, can you please help me??

Dear April: The itchy eyes and swelling could be caused by i) infection ii) eye allergies iii) conjunctivitis and iv) styes and chalazion. You should avoid touching or rubbing the affected eye because it may lead to the spread of infection to the other eye. You need to consult an ophthalmologist for eye examination and medication for the control of infection to prevent any complications.
