Eye health in a pro MMA fighter

Dear Ask The Doctor: Would a doctor clear a pro mma fighter after he has had a detached retina surgery, then a lens implant to correct a fast developing cataract in eye? should he fight again?

Dear Jim: It all depends on how successfully you recovered after retinal detachment surgery and also on how far your vision has returned after lens implant. Your question would be best answered by your treating doctor. However to my knowledge, if your vision has not been profoundly diminished, you may re enter fight, but there would always be a very high risk involved with another eye injury and associated blindness.
