Watery eyes and itching following use of contact lens

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am having an issue with my eyes wherein they are watering constantly, especially after I take my contacts out. Then they become itchy and even more watery. The fluid coming out of the eyes is clear, but when it dries on the skin around my eyes that skin really hurts and itches. I have worn contacts since 1984 with no problem. My upper eyelids look puffy. What can it be? What can I do for them? Thank you.
Dear Denise: You may have developed dry eyes due to contact lenses, that usually occurs due to disruption of tear production and damage to the eye surface leading to discomfort and irritation. You may switch to a different lens material or may be, use more disposable lens. You may also try switching to a different or stronger lens cleaning solution. More frequent and complete blinking would help moisten your eyes at regular intervals preventing dryness and related itching. If the symptoms do not improve, you may see an ophthalmologist for further evaluation.
