Diabetic and hypertensive with lots of black dots floating all over my eyes

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have seen a lot of small black dots in front of my eyes floating all over the place here lately. Usually I notice this more when my blood pressure is up or my sugar has dropped. Does this have anything to with either or is it my eyes? I'm have not been to the eye doctor in a while because I do not have insurance. I'm a diabetic. Please advice. Thanks

Dear Joyce: The condition that you have mention (seeing floaters) is usually not a good sign when you are suffering from Diabetes or Hypertension. The cause of the floaters may be due to diabetic retinopathy or retinal detachment caused by hypertension. You have also mentioned that you have migraine. With all of these symptoms, it is advisable to visit your doctor to see if your blood sugar levels and hypertension are under control and also to rule out diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment.
