SSRI - Adverse Drug Reactions

Dear Ask The Doctor: Could a combination of the prescribed medications and supplements contribute to an adverse drug reaction?

Dear Angela: The simultaneous use of Fluoxetine (SSRI) with Triptans (for migrains), Demerol (painkiller) or dextromethorphan (cough medicine) may lead to an adverse drug reaction known as serotonin syndrome. Symptoms include agitation, restlessness, diarrhea, hyperthermia, nausea and vomiting, increased blood pressure. Also the usage of fioricet may increase the sedative nature of fluoxetine and elavil.
