Chronic Hiccups Post Surgical Procedures

Dear Ask The Doctor: Over the last year and a half, i have had 7 ERCP's (with dilatation and stenting of the CBD) and a Roux-en-y Hepaticojejunostomy 10 months ago to repair a damanged Common Bile Duct from a Lap Chole. For the last 8 months I have been having random hiccups (about 10-20/hr). They don't occur at night - atleast they don't wake me or my husband. I am wondering if they could be related to any of the procedures I had done. The hiccups are loud, I can't quietly hiccup, and cause some discomfort. Any opinion would be greatly appreciated!!
Dear Yolanda: There are many, many causes of hiccups. It is possible that your hiccups are related tot he surgical procedures that you have had done. Since this problem has been going on for 8 months it suggest that there may be a significant medical issue which needs to be addressed. You should see you doctor and explain in detail your symptoms and previous surgeries nd have a full workup done. There is a good chance that your hiccups are actually psychogenic perhaps from the stress of all the surgical procedures you have had to undergo. |
