Dear Ask The Doctor: I have gastritis and i am not sure what to take i been takin acid reducer and anti gas my husband so i need something like a acid blocker i just need to know what to do to get the gas out my attacks last about 10 hours or so then my tummy is very sore for days afterward please tell me what the best thing for me to take to stop it or at least control it the gas in always in my upper abdomen and right side Dear Lisa: I understand your concern about your gastritis symptoms. Certainly bloating, excessive gas and heartburn are characteristics of gastritis. After the initial treatment with Antacids, you could try moving into the next step. I agree with you that medications to reduce the acid production might be your next choice. You might want to try using over the counter Prilosec or Nexium, however my true recommendation for you is to be evaluated by a Gastroenterologist to rule out infection with H. Pylori in which an addition of antibiotics and Bismuth might also be needed. In the meantime you could try using those medications and avoid heavy foods, alcohol, coffee and soda. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
