Bloody mucoid discharge from rectum

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had a hemrrhoidectomy 5 months ago and recovery has been hard. My question is, is it normal to have bleeding and mucusy discharge when I have a bowel movement or pass gas sometimes?

Dear Tiffany: No, it is not normal to have these symptoms. Mucous discharge and bleeding from the rectum are usually signs of an inflammatory bowel condition such as Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Your sysmtpoms are very unlikely to be associated with your hemorrhoid surgery. You should see a colorectal surgeon or a gastroenterologist for a complete examination as well as to have a special test done called a colonoscopy. This procedure involves examination of the large intestines via a special intrument inserted through th anus and rectum. All this is done while you are under general anesthesia and is not painful. It allows the doctor to also take biopsies of the large intestines to confirm the diagnosis.
