Three year old son won't eat after a gastroenteritis sickness

Dear Ask The Doctor: My Son is recovering from gastroenteritis, but he is over the worst now vomiting has completely stopped and diarrhea is only small amounts here and there. My actual concern is the fact he wont eat, he has lost alot of weight and his stomach is constantly rumbling but I'm struggling to persuade him to eat! I know it takes a while to get back to normal after a major bout of sickness but how long can I leave him without eating much before i should be concerned or seek medical help?

Dear Sara: I know you must be extremely worried but it does take some time especially after a severe bout of gastroenteritis for the appetite to return. I would give it about 5 days to the max. Try smaller quantities of food at regular intervals , give your son something that he likes and relishes. Also however keep a look out for worsening of symptoms, extreme lethargy, decreased urination as these may be warning signs and you may need to take him back in to get checked up. All the best.
