Black coloured stool and hemorrhoids

Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently had diahrea for a few days and towards the end it caused my hemmorhoids to really flare up. since then my stool has been black. As my diahrea got bad I started taking pepto (shortly after my first black stool). Its been a couple of days and my hemmhroids are still acting up a bit and my stool is still black. Should I see a dr or is it most likely caused by the hemmorhoid flare up? I feel fine now. Thanks

Dear Alan: Black colour of the stool may indicate bleeding from the upper gastro intestinal tract, since the blood gets digested as it travels down the GI tract and turns black. Hemorrhoidal bleeding is uaually bright red in colour. You may want to see your doctor and get a stool examination for occult blood to diagnose any minor bleeding from the GI tract that may be present.
