Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently was turned down for life insurance due to the lab results the Insurance company ordered. Those identified as "elevated" are as follows: AST-SGOT 52 ALY-SGPT 87 GGPT 201 Alkaline Alkaline Phosphatase 201 Do I need to be concerned?
Dear Darren: Liver function tests can be elevated for many different reasons including inflammation or damage to the liver, due to infection, disease, toxins or drugs including alcohol. They can also be raised secondary to biliary tract disease, such as gallstones, which prevent the normal flow of bile from the gallbladder and may create a back-pressure effect to the liver. I advise referral to a gastroenterologist who specialises in hepatology (hepatologist). He will carry out a detailed history and clinical examination, and may perform further investigations such as an ultrasound scan, to form a diagnosis. |
