Does Glucosamine Supplementation Trigger an Acute Gout Attack

Dear Ask The Doctor: Having several back to back gout attacks. Just recently started taking Glucosamine for knee pain. could the Glucosamine trigger gout attack ? thanks

Dear Dave: I cannot find any evidence to suggest that glucosamine supplementation has any effects on triggering of an acute gout flare. No known toxicity or serious side effects have been reported with the use of glucosamine. There have been occasional reports of mild gastrointestinal discomfort or stomach upset. Based on animal studies, it may alter glucose regulation/insulin sensitivity. It should therefore be used with caution in diabetes; individuals with allergy to shellfish; individuals with a history of bleeding, haemostatic disorders, or drug-related haemostatic problems; individuals taking anticoagulant medications, including warfarin, aspirin, aspirin-containing products, NSAIDs, or antiplatelet agents (eg, ticlopidine, clopidogrel, dipyridamole). It is contraindicated in individuals with active bleeding (eg, peptic ulcer, intracranial bleeding). Glucosamine should be discontinued prior to dental or surgical procedures (generally at least 14 days before).
