Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello. I am a 65 years old and for the past two week I have been suffering from painfull gout flare ups. I can barely walk because of them. My question is: Could it be that any of the medications I am taking could be directly causing it? Spirolactone, furosimide, Glipizide and AMiodarone.
Dear Delfin: Furosemide is the drug that may decrease the rate of uric acid excretion, thus leading to raised uric acid levels and gout flare ups. You may talk to your doctor regarding necessary changes in the prescribed medications.
