Migraine during periods - what medicine can I take? |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: What can I take I get a really bad headache before my period Dear Estela: There is a large percentage of women who experience migraine/headaches during their periods. These headaches are thought to be related to changes in the level of estrogen during the menstrual cycle. It is also seen that the frequency and severity of the headaches increases if you are on birth control pills. The treatment of migraines and headaches associated with periods include NSAIDS like naproxen, advil and motrin. You should preferably start taking the medicine two to three days before the onset of your periods. If your symptoms still persist, you will have to see your health care provider. Other medicines that can be used are small dose ergotamines, beta blockers and calcium channel blockers. |
