Dear Ask The Doctor: My 6 year old son has had a headache for 24 hours. It is in the centre of his forehead and is heightened by light. I have given him painstop and nurofen which provides temporary relief and he is sleeping to relieve pain. He has no other symptons at all except a temperature of 37.5 and ate normally yesterday. Is this just a regular headache?
Dear Bridget: Headaches in children are common and are usually not serious. Like adults, children can develop different types of headaches, including migraines or stress-related (tension) headaches. However it is important ot pay attention to headaches in children because it may indicate an infection, high levels of stress or anxiety, or minor head trauma. Headaches in children not treated with over-the-counter pain medications needs to be evaluated by a doctor. |
