Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi Doctor, Earlier this morning I sneezed and only noticed a few minutes later that I also sneezed blood. Right after sneezing I had a chest pain which gradually faded. Prior to that I have been feeling the same pain you would feel when having a brain freeze from eating ice on the left side of my face and it still hasn't gone away. I took paracetamol for the pain but it's still there. What would you advise?
Dear Charmaine: The symptoms that you are describing, nose bleed with pain on the left side of the face could be due to sinusitis. Sinusitis is caused by viral, bacterial or fungal infection of the nasal sinuses. Often there may be a collection of mucus that causes a feeling of heaviness of the face and headaches.
You may need to book an appontment with an otolaryngolosit for further evaluation. A CT scan is the most sensitive test to detect sinusitis. Treatment consists of over the counter antihistamines, saline nasal rinses and regular steam inhalation. |
