Sharp head pain causing ongoing headaches

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have had a cold or sinisitis for about a week now and two nights ago I had a coughing spell that caused a sharp excrutiating pain behind my right ear that shot to the top of my head and made a loud cracking sound. I immediately took a very hot shower which helped alleviate the pain. My right side of my head is very sore to the touch, similar to a muscle ache. At times, I can feel my pulse through the pain in my head. I have been taking aspirin, sudafed, and mucilex. I am seeing progress with the original symptoms but not with the headaches.
Dear Nancy: It is possible that your headaches are caused due to flaring up of the sinusitis. Often sinusitis can present as a one-sided headache. If treatment with over the counter medication and nasal spray with saline does not help, consider consulting an ENT specialist for further evaluation. There is a chance that there may be a collection of mucus in the sinuses which may have to be removed for you to feel better. |
