Dear Ask The Doctor: Well i play football and me and a friend before practice started playing by hitting our heads against the wall with our helmets. I hit my head kind of hard against the wall. After the hit a didnt loose concionce or threw up or my ears rang or anything like that just my head hurt a little, almost nothing,it felt like that normal feeling you get after hitting your head mildly. Now i have been having headaches for about a week or a few days more, they havnt been super painfull but they hurt a little sometimes, i havnt lost concionce or threw up or anything else during this time, just headaches every once in a while. I told my mom and she says its probably just hormones, my dad told me just to take some tylenol. The headaches arent really that bad, is it serious or just something minor, can i still play footall? Thanks!
Dear Roberto: It is possible to have occasional headaches following direct head trauma. Unless the headaches are severe and persistent, and are not relieved by simple acetaminophen, I do not think this should affect you playing football. You should attend your local emergency department if you have any of the following symptoms: loss of consciousness “knocked-out” after the head injury, amnesia (memory loss) for events before or after the injury, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, persistent severe headache or weakness in any of your limbs or difficultly walking. I would advise consulting your family doctor if your symptoms are not improving. |
