Random nose bleed and headaches.

Dear Ask The Doctor: I keep getting random nose bleeds and when it happens I get dizzy and a bad headache fallowed by blurred vision. This has been happening for a few months now. At first I thought maybe it was from dry weather but its been so damp lately and rainy. I'm starting to wonder if its something serious and i should look into it more?

Dear Jamie: You hsould definitely get this problem check out. There are many conditions which can present with nose bleeds (epistaxis). The more common cause are listed below:

  • Trauma (even minor trauma such as picking the nose)
  • Infections (Sinusitis, rhinitis)
  • Tumors (both malignant and benign)
  • Bleeding disorders (such as von Wilberand's Disease, Haemophilia)
  • Insufflation of drugs
  • Following nasal surgery

It is best to undergo an examination by an ENT specialist since your problem is recurrent. It may take a number of different test to arrive at the diagnosis.
