Dear Ask The Doctor: I tripped and fell head first onto the floor and since that day about 2 weeks ago, I have been getting intermittent bouts of headache's, dizzyiness, I have had one blackout, but feel like I will again. Sickness for the first week, nausea and chest pains.
Dear Aashi:You may be experiencing symptoms of a concussion, which is an injury to the brain resulting from an impact to the head. By definition, a concussion is not a life-threatening injury, but it can cause both short-term and long-term problems. A concussion results from a closed-head type of injury and does not include injuries in which there is bleeding under the skull or into the brain. To confirm diagnosis of a concussion, bleeding must have been excluded by a normal CT scan of the brain. It is common to experience headache, nausea and vomiting, confusion, with loss of short-term memory after a concussion. However if your symptoms are severe and not improving please do not hesitate to seek medical advice, with your family doctor or local ED. You may require anti-nausea medication or intravenous fluids, if nausea is severe and you are unable to tolerate oral fluids. |
